Public Hearing to Urge General Assembly to Expand Medicaid Set for Thursday, May 16

LEAP is encouraging its advocates to attend a public hearing to urge the Ohio General Assembly's Health and Human Services Committee to expand Medicaid coverage in Ohio. The hearing will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in the Cleveland City Council Conference Room, 6000 Lakeside Avenue. An accessible entrance is located near the back parking lot. Building security requires a photo I.D. for entry.

By jamming the room with proponents of Medicaid expansion, LEAP hopes to demonstrate that Greater Clevelanders support this important step for the community, which will expand coverage to a projected 26,000 uninsured adults in Cuyahoga County. "People will get the care they need, and health care dollars will be invested in the greater Cleveland community," said Deborah Nebel, LEAP's director of public policy.

Advocates for Ohio's Future, a statewide coalition of organizations that work to strengthen families and communities in Ohio, and of which LEAP is a member, has published a fact sheet, Making Cuyahoga County Stronger with Healthy Communities, about the benefits Medicaid expansion would bring to Cuyahoga County.

It doesn’t really change a thing, but knowing you’re not alone somehow helps. Janet, one of LEAP’s low-vision consumers, experienced this truth when she met Melissa Hernandez, one of LEAP’s independent living specialists. Janet has Usher syndrome, a condition that involves hearing loss or deafness and progressive vision loss caused by retinitis pigmentosa (RT), an eye disease. Hernandez has RT and is blind.

The Courage to Succeed

Charmaine is one of those lucky people who discovered her calling early on. “I knew I was going to be an artist when I was a young child making mud pies,” she said.  Charmaine is also lucky enough to know how to ask for help when she needs it. That’s how she ended up earning her degree at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) and, later, working with LEAP to create a vision for her business that’s as clear as her artistic vision.
