Non-Residential: Staying In Your Community
Posted on 05/14/25 by Isabel in Independent Living
Unlike independent living facilities, Centers for Independent Living (CILs) do not provide housing. Instead, we support individuals with disabilities in living independently in their community through various programs and services that empower independent living.
Independent Living teams across the country support individuals with disabilities in transitioning out of long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes and institutions, back into their communities.
The team will assess each individual and support them in moving back into an independent living setting of their choice. The setting they move into varies on a case-by-case basis. Consumers may move into an apartment, a group home, assisted living, or whatever they prefer for their situation. Each move is personalized to the consumer based on their goals, wants, and needs.
During the process, their Independent Living team will also assess if they need access to any accommodations or modifications. For example, during their assessment, their transition coordinator may find that the individual would benefit from a hospital bed, grab bar, or other accommodations.
Some of our services include independent living skills training, connecting you with personal assistance, such as caregivers to support activities of daily living (ADLs), implementing reasonable accommodations, and more.
