Lost To Expert Support: Jen And Scott Confidently Navigate Their Benefits

A quote from Scott.

In August 2024, Scott's daughter, Jen, experienced a stroke at 25. This led her to experience significant memory issues. Knowing she needed to get connected with benefits, Scott reached out to Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD), where she was already receiving employment support.

Benefit Assistance from LEAP

After hearing Jen's new circumstances, OOD referred Scott to LEAP, which provides personalized support to help families like his navigate benefits confidently. He and Jen began working with Barb Judah, LEAP's Director of Benefits and Employment Services.

While working with Barb, Scott went from feeling lost navigating Jen's benefits to feeling confident and supported while navigating the process.

Exploring Benefit Options

Understanding that Jen's coverage under his insurance would end when she turned 26, Barb wanted to explore each option with Scott.

One option they explored was an Ohio law allowing adult dependents with disabilities to remain on their parents' insurance after they turn 26 if they meet specific criteria. After submitting the documentation to his insurance company, the company ultimately declined Scott's request. So, Barb explained other options, empowering them to make the best decisions for Jen.

As they navigated the process together, they determined that Social Security Income (SSI) and CareSource (Medicaid) were the best options for Jen. Now, she has both benefits.

"LEAP is an incredible support system for anyone...I honestly don't know what we would have done without Barb," said Scott. He added that Barb's help was invaluable in answering questions and navigating the process. Now, Scott recommends LEAP to anyone.
